The Essential III effectively takes some of those updates and standardises them. At the same time, Pro-Ject ensured that some components could be upgraded to bring the Essential performance closer to that of the Debut series. The Essential range took parts from earlier Debuts and simplified the basic design. The Essential range came into being because the Debut series (which, as its name suggests was the original start point for the Pro-Ject range) crept up in price as more features and higher spec materials were used. The Essential III is a wholesale revision rather than a mild tweak and Pro-Ject claims it represents a significant jump in performance over its predecessor. The Essential II was available in this format as well and the price for the Essential III has risen by £30 to £240.īefore anyone starts muttering about Brexit and wanders off to burn an effigy of Nigel Farage, it is worth pointing out that the difference in price has more to do with changes to the specification than any pressure on s terling as a currency. The Essential III at the time of review is only available as a straight turntable, requiring a phono stage to function and having no means of outputting to a computer – although Pro-Ject can help you with both of these functions should you desire them. Is the Essential III going to be the pick of the pack?Īs an introductory comment, the review of the Essential II was for the version fitted with a phono stage and USB interface. To prosper in times like this, you need to be the best turntable going and it seems Pro-Ject knows this. I personally believe that 2017 is going to see a fall back in record player sales and a drop in the sale of media as well. The Essential III enters a market where many companies who were absent in May 2015 have released excellent products and existing players have upped their game too. It was – as I noted at the time – no looker but it worked brilliantly. The Essential II was a pared back Debut that offered a cost effective way to get going with vinyl. When I reviewed the Essential II, the affordable market was dominated by Pro-Ject and Rega with a few other brands nibbling away at the peripheries. On a wider level, the scope of the changes that have been carried out to the Essential III are indicative of how much the affordable turntable market has developed in the last eighteen months. This is interesting from the perspective of AVForums as the first turntable review I was commissioned to do was the Essential II so it is the first time there is a point of comparison. In some cases, the nature of the item means that it is non-returnable, for example, due to hygiene/health and personal care/wellness/consumable nature of the product. The Pro-Ject Essential III is the latest model in Pro-Ject's extensive range of affordable turntables to be given an overhaul and the changes that have been carried out are pretty extensive.
